The Mermaid Archetype for Aphrodite April!

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   This week’s Femme Fatale Friday is about incorporating the Mermaid Archetype into Aphrodite April!    Given that the Mermaid Archetype is so ingrained in my personality and my personal spiritual practice, I thought that it was an ideal way to discuss embracing Aphrodite April.    I will be going over three Goddesses associated with Mermaid energy to embrace this Aphrodite April in their own section below.   Without further ado, let’s look at the Mermaid Archetype for Aphrodite April!

APHRODITE & MERMAIDS

~The most obvious Goddess who has Mermaid associations for Aphrodite April is Aphrodite Herself!    Aphrodite’s name literally means ‘Foam Born’ lending to Her association with fertile waters, the Sea, and Mermaids.    Aphrodite is known to have Nymph Handmaidens.   This is very common for Greek Goddesses, but more specifically due to Aphrodite’s watery nature, many of those handmaidens as specifically depicted to be Sea Nymphs and Mermaids!   With Aphrodite herself being born of the Sea, She may also be perceived as being closer to Mermaids than to any other form of Greek Faery woman, the Goddess possibly even depicted as a Mermaid Herself.

MELUSINE & MERMAIDS

~Melusine is a Faery Woman and Water Goddess of Celtic lore, with tales of her common in France and Germany.    She is deeply connected to Avalon, having been raised there.   In her tales, she is depicted as having a Mermaid form, where she must spend Saturdays in a bathtub with her mermaid tail, or a serpent tail, on full display.    That is why when she married her husband, he was strictly prohibited from seeing her on Saturdays.    It is his ultimate betrayal of her trust by spying on her bathing that would lead to her leaving him and returning to Avalon!   As a fun fact, all of us see Melusine in day-to-day life because she is the Mermaid on the Starbucks logo.   Of course, in her lore, she is not necessarily depicted as twin-tailed, as the exact nature of her watery appendage changes depending on the exact variant of her legend.   As a fertile and creative Faery woman and Goddess, Melusine is an ideal Celtic Mermaid energy to tap into during Aphrodite April!

MORGAN LE FAY & MERMAIDS

~I could not do a Mermaid Archetype and Goddess post without mentioning my Matron Goddess, Morgan le Fay!     Morgan le Fay’s name translates to ‘Sea Born’.   This links her entomology to Aphrodite due to their names having similar meanings, albeit in different languages of Welsh for Morgan and Greek for Aphrodite!   Morgan le Fay is the Lady of Avalon, presiding over the Ninefold Sisterhood of Avalon, ruling the Sacred Isle of Avalon.    As Avalon is an island, the connection between Morgana and water is paramountly displayed.    Morgan le Fay also shares her name with a species of Welsh Water Faery, the Mari-Morgans.   All of this put together serves to show that Morgan le Fay is another ideal Celtic Goddess energy to embrace when connecting to the Mermaid archetype!

~Each of these three potent Goddesses can show us different ways to embrace the Mermaid Archetype in our lives.    Aphrodite reminds us to embrace the sensual side of life through the indulgent and emotional nature of water flowing all around us.    Melusine reminds us to embrace the ever-fertile nature of the Well Maiden and the creative inspiration of the designer within us all, while also encouraging us to have firm boundaries that we do not allow others to cross.    Morgan le Fay reminds us to amass the knowledge of the land, honor the cycles within our lives, and not be afraid to make the unpopular decisions if they serve our personal Sovereignty!
