Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is another look at the Mermaid Archetype, this time with a focus on star lore and astrological ties to the archetype. Without further ado, let’s look at some star lore, astrology, and lunar ties in their own sections!
VIRGO ♍️ PISCES ♓️ AXIS
~The heart of the Mermaid archetype in star lore hinges around the Virgo Pisces axis, that is the fact that Virgo and Pisces are sister signs of the Zodiac, always sharing the same moon cycles. On the Ogham Grove YouTube Channel, there are some great videos explaining how the Virgo Pisces Axis, and particularly the Full Moon in Virgo, serves to form the Mermaid Melusine in the sky! I love the idea that the stars and constellations literally show a combination of Earth and Water elements, in fact Earth and Water are forever linked in the structure of the Zodiac Wheel, with an Earth sign and a Water sign always sharing the Lunation together, just as Air and Fire are paired in this way! It also serves as a confirmation of one of the basic aspects of the Mermaid archetype, that is the fact that the Mermaid archetype is hyper-feminine, embodying both of those most deeply feminine elements of Earth and Water. The Mermaid is a woman (Earth) from the waist up and a fish (Water) from the waist to the tips of her fins, so even her body structure exemplifies the balance of Earth and Water! This balancing of Earth and Water is also a balancing of the Tarot archetypes of Queen of Cups and Queen of Pentacles (as previously mentioned in my first Mermaid archetype post), and even a balancing of the Major Arcana Tarot archetypes of the Empress and the High Priestess. After all, the Mermaid is both the ultimate symbol of sensuality, sexuality, and fertility, as well as, the symbol of the unconscious, psychic, and oracular realms!
PRIESTESS & MYSTIC
~That brings us nicely into our next section of this post, the fact that the Virgo archetype is the Priestess and the Pisces archetype is the Mystic. The Priestess is the embodied feminine channel through which the knowledge of the Goddess can be voiced, but I think in the case of Virgo and Priestesses, she has a bit of the Empress energy, with the idea of being fully embodied and grounded in the natural world while channeling the divine. The Mystic is the prophetic and oracular side of Priestessing, more aligned with the High Priestess energy. Making the Virgo and Pisces axis the balancing of these two divine feminine archetypes and Tarot energies, forming the Mermaid archetype!
VIRGO MOON
~Now, I want to shift into speaking about how this applies directly to my own Natal Chart. As someone who is a Virgo Moon (in addition to a Virgo Sun), I am intimately connected with the Virgo Pisces Axis, and the Full Moon in Virgo is the Full Moon that forms the Mermaid in the sky. That means that Mermaids are intimately linked to Virgo Moon signs, but I am sure this could likely also be said of Pisces Moons (but as I am not a Pisces Moon and do not know anyone who is I cannot confirm that the attraction to Mermaid energy is the same). My husband is also a Virgo Moon, and while he does not embody the Mermaid archetype in his life, he is very attracted to Mermaid lore and loves how I embody the Mermaid archetype. So I find that Virgo Moon signs tend to naturally embody the Mermaid archetype, or are sexually allured by the Mermaid archetype!
MOON & MERMAIDS
~The final thing I want to acknowledge is the link between Mermaids and the Moon in general. Mermaids as Water Fae have energies often tied to the tides, and the tides are pulled by the Moon. Another way that Mermaids link to the Moon is the fact that Mermaids embody the ultimate hyper-feminine energy, as stated above, and the Moon is also linked to the cycle of a woman’s menstruation! So I think that this has brought this exploration of the Mermaid archetype, star lore, astrology, and the moon full circle.
~I hope you have enjoyed this post about the Mermaid archetype through a star and moon lens. What do you find to be the most interesting aspect of Mermaids and their connection to star lore? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
