Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is going to be about the Time of Blodeuwedd in the Sisterhood of Avalon tradition, as we have just entered this time with the Full Moon in Virgo on Saturday! Now, I obviously celebrate Blodeuwedd all year round, being that I am a Priestess of Blodeuwedd, initiated by the Goddess Herself. That being said, I do find the way the Sisterhood of Avalon plots the cycle of the year with Goddesses being represented during certain times of the year to be fascinating, and that is why I have decided to do this post.
The time of Blodeuwedd begins with what is called the Moon of Evocation, which is the Full Moon in Virgo, the first Full Moon when the Sun is in Pisces, which was this past Saturday, as mentioned above. I have a very strong personal connection to this Full Moon because I am a Virgo Moon, meaning that the Full Moon in Virgo is always a very powerful Full Moon for me each year! During this moon, the portion of the story of Blodeuwedd that is studied is the tale of her birth from Oak, Broom, and Meadowsweet flowers (although it is often said to be nine blooms used to conjure her) by the magicians Math and Gwydion. It is a time of purity, innocence, and perceived happiness for Blodeuwedd. That is why the keywords for this card in The Avalonian Oracle are new beginnings, creativity, manifestation, fresh perspective, and finding solutions.
The second moon in the time of Blodeuwedd is the Moon of Activation, which is the Full Moon in Libra, and the first Full Moon when the Sun is in Aries. During this moon, the portion of the story of Blodeuwedd that is studied is the tale of her marriage to Lleu Llaw Gyffes to cement his right to rule the land, making him a fully-fledged adult male by medieval Welsh standards, finally circumventing the destinies that Lleu had been given by his mother, Arianrhod. The keywords for this card in The Avalonian Oracle are order, victory, responsibility, outward growth, conscious mind, balance, relationship, and clarity.
The third moon in the time of Blodeuwedd is the Moon of Revelation, the Full Moon in Scorpio, and the first Full Moon when the Sun is in Taurus. This is also the Welsh holiday Calan Mai, or Calan Haf, which is Lunar Beltane! During this moon, the portion of the story of Blodeuwedd that is studied is the tale of her falling in love with Gronw Pebyr, and their joint attempt to kill Lleu Llaw Gyffes to rule his lands together. Blodeuwedd had already begun to feel unloved by Lleu as he was often away from their Court on business, so she was struck when she finally found real love, the first time she felt the pull of attraction and sovereign choice, due to her being made to be Lleu’s wife she never had a choice and attraction to him never mattered! That is why the keywords for this card in The Avalonian Oracle are rejecting expectation, attaining goals, inward growth, acknowledging the shadow, freeing the unconscious, bucking traditions, living one’s truth, transformation, and liminality.
The final moon in the time of Blodeuwedd is the Moon of Liberation, the Full Moon in Sagittarius, and the first Full Moon when the Sun is in Gemini. During this moon, the portion of the story of Blodeuwedd that is studied is the tale of her punishment by being turned into an Owl by Math and Gwydion after Lleu was healed from the attempt that had been made on his life. Her maidens were drowned in what is known as the Lake of the Maidens while being pursued by an angry Gwydion, and Gronw was killed by Lleu for his role in the attempt to kill him! But Blodeuwedd is finally freed from her restriction and control of the magicians through being an Owl. That is why the keywords for this card in The Avalonian Oracle are transformation, evolution, personal fulfillment, wisdom, freedom, clear sight, unity of opposites, and personal sovereignty.
I find so much spiritual development in studying different aspects of different tales during times of the year, or times of life, that they align with and that is the basis of Jhenah Telyndru choosing to focus on aspects of tales each Full Moon. I hope you have enjoyed this small deep dive into the Time of Blodeuwedd in the Sisterhood of Avalon tradition. Do you celebrate Blodeuwedd this time of year?
