Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. This week’s Femme Fatale Friday is about the power of the Mermaid archetype and how I embrace it as an important part of my spiritual path and magickal life! This is a bit of a companion piece to Wednesday’s post about the Queen of Cups archetype, as the Mermaid archetype is one that combines the energy of Queen of Pentacles and Queen of Cups quite perfectly. The Mermaid archetype is one of the archetypes I have been embracing for my entire life, so this may be the archetype that is closest to my heart and soul!
The Mermaid archetype is a very interesting in that she has many layers, not just the fun-loving and free-spirited individual but also the Femme Fatale Siren (hence why we are covering this archetype for Femme Fatale Friday). The core of the Mermaid archetype is Fertility, Sexuality, Beauty, Abundance, Romance, and the Perils of Love.
The Mermaid is an ever-fertile creature, always associated with the abundance and sexuality that will forever be able to procreate and be the creative force in her own life and the life of others, full of Alchemy and Inspiration! Her sexuality pours from her in a natural air of ultimate allure, a truly pure and innocent sexuality that is about embracing our own bodies and embracing self-love. The Mermaid is truly one of the most important beauty icons of all time! She is the natural beauty with her long hair, which is another symbol of fertility, as those with long hair are said to be more naturally fertile, combed while sitting on a large rock. She holds her mirror, whose shape is the symbol of femininity, the shape of the symbol for the planet of love, Venus!
The Mermaid in her Siren form is both full of romantic allure, while also warning about the Perils of Love. She reminds us that while she is a romantic soul dreaming of True Love, she will also lure in those unfaithful in love to have them drown due to their lack of fidelity, like Morgana and her Val Sans Retour. The other aspects of the Perils of Love that the Mermaid reminds us of in her Siren aspect are that we must be careful that love does not turn into obsession and that we must be mindful of whom we give our hearts to, for our hearts can easily be broken! When we heed these warnings, we can find true and lasting love, both with a partner and with ourselves. Self-love and not being so critical of myself have always been the main aspects of my Shadow work, showing me that embracing the Siren energy is very helpful to learning to prioritize loving myself!
On a personal level, as I mentioned I have embraced this archetype for my entire life. Mermaids have always been one of the species of Faery that I am most deeply connected with, making them an ideal archetype to embrace daily! Interestingly, this also speaks to my soul and helps me learn to feel comfortable in my own skin. My husband has also always compared me to Mermaids and Water Faeries of all sorts, bringing this idea that the Mermaid archetype is omnipresent in my life ever more full circle!
I hope that you have enjoyed this short introduction to the Mermaid archetype. I do plan to do more posts about this very profound archetype in my life in the future. Do you resonate with the Mermaid archetype? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

I’ve always loved mermaids, but I never tried their archetype (or any other) for fear of the shadow side, but today I’ve started using metmaid’s archetype and so far I’m enjoying its allures, after all I feel at home with this concept.
Thanks for reading and commenting. I am so glad you are feeling into the Mermaid archetype! Archetype work is so powerful and I hope it goes well for you!
