Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   Today’s post is about how the Queen of Pentacles archetype is experienced in my two favorite fairytales!   The energy of the Queen of Pentacles is both the young Spring Maiden, Flower Bride, and May Queen energy as well as the High Queen, Queen of the Underworld, and Queen of Death energy.   She embodies much of the Womb and Tomb dynamic of Goddesses of Nature, the Earth, and Vegetation.   The Queen of Pentacles is the Faery Princess and Faery Queen tending the new blooms of growth and mothering the fully grown plant, as well as the Earth to which the dead return!   These varied energies of the complex Queen of Pentacles are possibly best represented in folklore and myth, and as stated above, today we are going to look at how it is shown in my two favorite fairytales.   Without further ado, let’s take a look at the Queen of Pentacles, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Sleeping Beauty! 

~QUEEN OF PENTACLES & SNOW WHITE~

Snow White & the Evil Queen

~Snow White is the innocent young woman in her first blooms of youthful grace.   She is the archetypal Spring Maiden who will become the Flower Bride after she succeeds in her test.    The test is given via a Deathlike Sleeping Curse placed on her by her stepmother the Evil Queen.   The Evil Queen is the mature High Queen energy, plagued by the darkness of her vanity.    She is taking on the role of the Queen of Shadows, the Queen of Death in her attempts to take the life of Snow White!   In the original Grimm fairytale, the Evil Queen makes three attempts on the life of Snow White, the final of which is the poisoned apple, which succeeds in the Deathlike Sleep.   We as readers can clearly see the youthful and nurturing energy of the Queen of Pentacles in Snow White, while also seeing the more mature and Shadowy energy of the Queen of Pentacles in the Evil Queen!

~QUEEN OF PENTACLES & SLEEPING BEAUTY~

Aurora & Maleficent

~Aurora is the innocent young Princess just barely turning sixteen, coming into her womanhood for the first time.   She is another aspect of the archetypal Spring Maiden ready to become the Flower Bride, she embraces the May Queen energy connected to the newly embraced and awakened sexuality.   In the Disney version, seeing her dancing barefoot in the Woodland and falling in love with the Prince, before knowing the truth of who either of them is, serves as an example of this embracing of a burgeoning sexuality.   Aurora is deeply in tune with the physical world and the sensual world, which is why she is barefoot, delighting in feeling the energy of Mother Earth beneath her feet!   All of these things aptly describe the energy of the youthful and slightly more mature lover aspects of the Queen of Pentacles.   Maleficent is the Dark Faery who cursed Aurora into her own Deathlike Sleep, testing her and forcing her to grow and mature by facing her own Shadows, just as Snow White was tasked to do.   Maleficent is very much the High Queen, Queen of Death, and Queen of the Underworld made manifest in the world of Sleeping Beauty.   Yet again, Aurora is a Princess who becomes the High Queen, fully awakened to the mature energy of the Queen of Pentacles!    As with Snow White and the Evil Queen, we as readers will find that there is Queen of Pentacles energy in both Aurora and Maleficent, showing us the complexity of this Tarot archetype.
