Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is all about Anna from Disney’s Frozen! Being a huge fairytale lover, I have long had a soft spot for Frozen, and truly enjoy the alternate take on the Hans Christian Andersen tale The Snow Queen. While I do love Elsa, I have always felt drawn to Anna, as she is more similar to me from a personality standpoint! That is why I wanted to write about Anna today.
In particular, I want to focus on a theory that I have developed about Anna and the position she holds within the Frozen universe. I have heard and read a lot of Disney film theories that state Anna as being a representative of the element of Fire, to balance out Elsa’s control over the element of Ice. I always found the idea of elemental power being at the center of the magick in Frozen interesting, and I especially became ever more intrigued by this concept after seeing Frozen 2.
However, my theory is that Anna was never meant to represent the element of Fire at all. I know that she has red hair and a warm heart, which is where much of the association with her being Fire comes from. Elsa is cold therefore she is Ice, Anne is warm therefore she is Fire. While this theory does have merit, I do not gravitate towards this actually being the case anymore. After my most recent viewing of the films, and rewatching season four of Once Upon a Time, which famously featured the Frozen characters, I have developed this different theory as to why Anna is a balance to Elsa but in a way I have never seen or heard discussed!
You see dear reader, Anna is not Fire, she is Earth element incarnate in her universe. The idea of Fire embodying anger, rage, and a fierce temperament never made sense for Anna’s personality. In contrast, Earth embodies nurturing, abundance, love, fertility, stability, and growth. Spring and Harvest Goddesses are most deeply connected to the Earth element. With all that being said, I believe that all of this Earthy energy much better describes Anna and her place in the Frozen universe. Anna is presented at the beginning of the first film as the young ingenue, a bit naive, and very romantic and loving. This is the energy of the Spring Maiden, the Flower Bride, and the May Queen, and that is also the energy of the Vernal Equinox through Beltane on the Wheel of the Year for the Earth element! As the story progressed, Anna grew in her ability to nurture, protect, and promote new growth in those around her. Anna’s love allowed Elsa to truly embrace her nature. Her ability to care for those around her even led her to become the great protective figure in the second film, which would lead to her becoming Queen of Arendelle! When we left off at the end of the sequel, Anna had come into her own Mama Earth nature, leading and nurturing all of her Kingdom while also being the connection to the Nature Spirits due to her bond with Elsa. This Mama Earth energy relates to the late Summer and Autumn Equinox until Samhain on the Wheel of the Year for the Earth element! The last thing I want to mention is that Anna’s color palette in the films is much more Earthy in nature as well. We often see greens and browns on Anna, along with purple used to represent her royalty. The greens and browns show her in the colors of the Faery Forest, and also show her as an Earth element figure!
Anna truly is the Spring Maiden and the Earth Mama rolled into one. Now I know why the idea of her representing Fire never really made complete sense to me. It is because I believe she always represented Earth! I hope you have enjoyed this post about Anna and the Earth element. Do you think Anna is more Fire or Earth?
