Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is going to focus on why it is important to honor your personal cycles and rhythms. Each of us has an internal cycle and personal rhythms that we need to honor in order to come more into alignment with ourselves.
There are circadian rhythms that govern how we go through our sleep cycles. There are also the hormonal cycles we all go through each month. Now, women have a much more pronounced hormonal cycle, given the changing tides of hormones during the menstrual cycle, but men also have an ebb and flow of hormones each month.
Getting into a habit of sleeping in alignment with our natural inclinations helps us feel more well-rested. This means sleeping when you begin to be tired, instead of forcing yourself to sleep when not feeling tired, but also waking when you naturally wake instead of forcing yourself to wake when still tired. However, this is a very difficult rhythm to honor, given as adults we all have to deal with responsibilities that may make us need to change our sleeping patterns. Personally, I cannot sleep with my natural rhythms because I am a total night owl, feeling most of my energy late at night and desiring to sleep in, so in order to go to my day job I must go to sleep early and wake early. Usually having been up so early helps me begin to feel tired when I have to go to sleep, so at least that helps. I actually wake very early, since it takes me literally three hours minimum to be a functional person! That is the way I have used my knowledge of my natural cycles to figure out a way to work with them when having to rise way earlier than I would like. It is less than ideal, but it does work for me. At least this way of working with my sleep cycle affords me the ability to have long slow mornings full of Tarot work, yoga, tea, and meditation in order to slowly awaken to the day ahead!
Getting into alignment with your hormonal cycles allows you to become more in tune with your own body. You can deepen into yourself and feel more aligned with your own body, by trying to honor your energy levels as they shift throughout the month. This means that women should honor the need to rest and not push themselves too much during menstruation, as it is a time when our bodies need that level of rest and relaxation! The cycle shift is also felt as the Wheel of the Year turns, with us having generally more energy during the light half of the year and less energy during the dark half of the year. The Winter months in general are a time to go within and rest. Honoring the natural cycle of the seasons, as well as our personal hormonal cycles, helps to ground us into our bodies and our connection to the Earth!
There is no one-size-fits-all way to get in tune with your cycles, these are just some things that have helped me to feel more grounded. Whether you have to sort of hack certain cycles, like I did with my sleeping pattern to be able to better function during the day, or you are simply honoring the need to rest during the Winter, any little bit helps.
I hope you have enjoyed this very short post about honoring personal cycles and rhythms. In what ways do you honor your own personal cycles? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
