Offbeat Faerytale Films to Ring in the New Year!

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   Today’s New Year’s Eve 2023 post is all about why I choose to ring in the New Year by watching Offbeat Faerytale Films.    I have come to realize that watching fantastical and Offbeat Faerytale Films is a way to embrace the limitless possibilities and optimistic hope that each New Year provides!

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990)

~This Tim Burton classic is a wacky fairytale about the unfinished creation of an inventor who gets brought into the home of a kind Avon Lady in her suburban town.   He quickly goes from being seen as strange to being seen as an artist who can sculpt hedges and eventually groom dogs and cut women’s hair.    The ending is bittersweet and lovely, with his ice sculptures being the reason for the snow in the town.    As it ends at Christmas in Wintery snowy splendour, it makes for a great Wintertime watch!

ENCHANTED (2007)

~This Disney film is a fairytale film that works as a comedic send-up of all of Disney’s classic fairytale films!    I truly adore seeing a fairytale Princess fall in love with a stoic man from the regular world.

LEGEND (1985)

~This film is a sweet Enchanted Forest adventure featuring unicorns.   However, the best part of this film is seeing Tim Curry as Darkness!    I adore Tim Curry and he is at his best when he plays really out-there characters.

LABYRINTH (1986)

~This film is an adorable story of a teenage girl who lost her baby brother to the Goblin King, played by David Bowie, and has to get him back!    Jim Henson is behind the Faery creatures in this film, and Brian Froud designed them, making this a must-watch for Faery lovers of all sorts.

THE DARK CRYSTAL (1982)

~Another team-up of Jim Henson and Brian Froud, this early 80s high fantasy Faery film is absolutely iconic!   I adore the aesthetic of this film as much as the plot.   It is the perfect way to spend time being transported to a faraway Faeryland!

STARDUST (2007)

~This is an absolutely underrated film.   It is a gorgeous adaptation of the novel by Neil Gaiman about a Star who comes to life and the love story between her and the protagonist who had intended to find the fallen star to gift it to the woman he intended to propose to!

THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987)

~Finally, this list would not be complete without mentioning the Offbeat Faerytale Film that I watch myself every New Year’s Eve!    I have been watching The Princess Bride every New Year’s Eve for more than a decade now, as it is the perfect fairytale fantasy to kick the New Year off with a hopeful attitude.    My husband has been watching it yearly with me since we moved in together, and now it is a beloved annual event for both of us!

~I hope you have enjoyed learning about my tradition of kicking off the New Year with Offbeat Faerytale Films.   What is your favorite New Year’s Eve tradition?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
