Earth Element Fae

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   Today’s post is going to be about Faeries with Earth Element associations.   I recently wrote a post about Winter and the Earth element, so I thought that simply focusing on the Earth Element Fae would be a fun companion piece and continuation!    I will simply be going over different Earth Element Faeries in small sections of their own.

THE LEPRECHAUN

~Leprechauns are Earth Fae who are very commonly associated with early Spring, especially in their usage during St.Patrick’s Day.    They are male Fae who are always linked with their pots of gold and dispersing of luck.   The connection with gold links them to finances and money, which are deeply linked to the Earth element, and we see this in the suit of Pentacles which is the Earth element Tarot suit and associated with the finances!

DWARFS

~The most famous examples of the Dwarf, which are male Fae associated with the Earth element and often connected to Winter, are featured in fairytales.    Both Snow White & the Seven Dwarves and Snow White & Rose Red feature a Dwarf, or several, as main figures in the tale.   Interestingly, the Dwarf is featured in very different lights in each of those tales.    In Snow White & the Seven Dwarves, they are protectors and friends to Snow White.   In Snow White & Rose Red, the Dwarf is the villain of the story, seeking to only cause harm to the sisters and their love interests!   Both of these fairytales are very Winter-centric in their own ways, which makes the Earth element and Winter connection very pronounced for this species of Fae.

KNOCKERS

~Knockers are a species of Cornish Faeries and are given their name for the fact that they made themselves known by knocking to alert miners to things they needed to know.   The association with mines makes an obvious connection to the Earth element.    It is said that they would help miners find where the most rich veins of ore are located, but could also perform tricks to amuse themselves.

PIXIES & PISKIES

~To clarify, the names are different based on where they are located.   Pixies are found in the English West Country, but Piskies are only found in Cornwall.    Yet, no matter the spelling, they are essentially the same species.   These Fae were so widely believed in that houses would have a ‘pisky pow’ which is ridge-tiles on the roof where the faeries could dance!   They are often said to live in the fairy mounds and were known to wear bells to signal their presence when they danced and traveled.   There is some folklore that states that they could turn into hedgehogs, which are an animal deeply associated with the Earth element, to begin with!   Finally, I want to mention that Pixies are often said to knot the manes of horses and wild ponies, these knots are even often called ‘Faery Locks’ or ‘Pixie Locks’!   Altogether, these are some of the most iconic examples of Fae folk around!

THE GREEN MAN

~Finally, the last Fae we will be looking at who is associated with the Earth element is The Green Man.   The iconic Green Man is the Lord of the Wild Woodlands!    He is associated with the Winter months in his own right through the Holly King, who battles the Oak King for dominion over the rulership of the land.   He is also shown in the character of the Green Knight from Arthurian legend!

~I hope you have enjoyed this short post about Earth Element Fae.   What is your favorite species of Fae associated with the Earth element?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
