Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is going to be another one discussing the Queen of Pentacles. Over the last ten months, most of the year 2023, I have been really deepening my bond with this particular Tarot card. I have written about this in previous posts, and have written many posts about my journey towards embracing Earth Magick, Green Magick, and learning Herbology. All of this does relate to my embracing the Queen of Pentacles as an archetype!
I firmly have come to believe that each of us who feels pulled towards Tarot, has a Tarot card that speaks to us on a profound level much more deeply than the other 77 cards. For the longest time, nearly an entire decade of reading the cards, I felt pulled most strongly to the six Divine Feminine cards, but not to one more so than the others. To define my assertion that there are six Divine Feminine cards I will list them here. They are The High Priestess, The Empress, The Queen of Swords, The Queen of Wands, The Queen of Cups, and The Queen of Pentacles. Each of these cards holds aspects of the essential Divine Feminine qualities.
Now, it was not until I made the fateful decision to take Herbs of Avalon, taught by the incredible Suzanne O’Gara, owner of Alchemy of Avalon, that this changed. Once I made the choice to study Herbology with a certified Herbalist, I began to realize how much I really was connected to the Earth element. It may seem strange that I had long thought that I was not very connected to the Earth element, given that I am a Virgo Sun and Moon and have long had an interest in Green Magick and Herbology. However, I had simply thought that I was very connected to the Water element, and I do still practice Water Magick, but I have realized that I am even more connected to the Earth element than I am to the Water element! In finding a deeper connection to the Earth element, I also became more connected to the suit of Pentacles in general.
At the same time that I began to deepen into Herbology and Green Magick, I also began to have the Pentacles suit come up more frequently during my daily Tarot readings. In particular, I had the Queen of Pentacles come up for me in readings very frequently for several months! This actually began even before I decided to take the Herbs of Avalon class. So it may be that the Queen of Pentacles card helped lead me to the class, not the other way around! As she was appearing so often in my morning Tarot readings, I also began to meditate on the Queen of Pentacles card from several different decks in order to gain a greater understanding of the card and the archetype.
The Queen of Pentacles is the Queen most commonly given different names, in that the suit of Pentacles is the most often renamed suit of the entire deck. So she can also commonly be called the Queen of Discs and the Queen of Coins, without having the other three suits renamed! As far as her energy, she is the embodiment of the fertility and abundance of the Earth made manifest. She is the classic example of the Sovereignty Goddess in her form as the Flower Bride, the Goddess of the Land whose marriage to a King grants him his right to rule! We see this energy in the tales of Blodeuwedd, Guinevere, Isolde, and Rhiannon, to name a few. In this way, the energy of the Queen of Pentacles is the energy of the May Queen in her varied forms, but she can also be the High Queen of the Earth in Winter (a time often associated with the Pentacles suit in Tarot and the Earth element), whose abundance is what will sustain us through the harsh Winter months. She is often seen as maternal and nurturing in her way of caring for those that she loves. As a Queen, she is the embodiment of the caring monarch wishing to protect the people of her country.
She is such an interesting archetype, in that she balances the sensuality and sexuality of the abundant fertility Goddess with the nurturing of a mother in a way that other Tarot archetypes do not. She is not just a loving mother, but she has that in her. She is also not just the sexual and fertile love Goddess, but she has that in her too. I think the complexity and layered nature of her archetype of this Green Earth Mother and Sexual Fertility Goddess are what makes her my Tarot archetype!
Now that I have explained how I discovered my personal Tarot archetype, I will give some recommendations on how you can find your own. First, I would note down what cards come up in your readings and look for patterns. Second, I would note down the cards that get a strong visceral reaction out of you when you see them. Third, I would see what imagery in the cards pulls you most deeply. Fourth, I would take a look at what element you are most closely drawn to. Fifth, I would look into your own numerology and find cards that are associated with your numerology life path number and astrological associations. Finally, I would meditate on the cards you think may be your ultimate archetype card, and see what comes up during meditation!
