Herbs for Beauty

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   Today’s post is all about different ways to use herbs for beauty treatments.   I will go over five different ways to use herbs in beauty treatments and rituals in their own sections below.

HENNA

~One of the greatest hair herbs ever is the ancient Indian herb Henna!   I henna my hair every four weeks and have been doing so for the last eight years.   My hair is naturally a very deep auburn, almost a mahogany red, so indoors it looks very dark (some say black even) but in the sunlight, you can see the vibrant red.    Without henna, red shades, no matter their depth tend to fade, which is why I began using henna in the first place.   It is also protective against the UV rays of the sun and is antibacterial, anti-fungal, nourishing for the scalp, and promotes healthy hair growth!   It is truly a magickal treatment for the hair.   Even if you do not want to add redness to your hair, some formulations skew more brown, and even technically formulations that are color-free (for those with blonde hair for example).   I have never used the brown or color-free versions of henna, so I cannot state how well they work, but I wanted to mention them as they do exist.   There are also henna-based shampoos to give your hair the benefits of this herb if that would suit your needs better.

HAIR TONICS & RINSES

~Nothing beats a good hair tonic or rinse to make your hair healthy and shiny.   With the darkness of my hair, I tend to favor making myself a very strong Rosemary tonic to promote shine, as well as to increase the magick with Rosemary as a Priestess plant of remembrance!   There is much to be said about using Rosemary on your head, as it is so strongly associated with memory and learning, so this gives even more dimension to having Rosemary in your hair tonic.    My preferred way of using hair tonics is to apply them to clean damp hair after I shower, massaging them through my hair and letting it dry naturally!

FACE TONERS

~The most important ingredient of facial toners is Witch Hazel, which naturally cleanses, tones, and protects the skin.    I also love to use Rosewater in my facial toners!    It is so beautiful and refreshing to use a good quality toner on your face each day!   I prefer to use Witch Hazel and Rose facial toners to freshen my skin in the morning as a way to wake up and revitalize my skin after I have slept.

LOTIONS

~I cannot tout my love for lotion enough, as I have to use moisturizers every single day with my very fair and sensitive skin!    I favor any natural ingredients in my lotions, especially cocoa butter and aloe!   I even keep my own aloe plant, and have been keeping aloe plants for a very long time, so that I can mix fresh aloe into beauty treatments.

SALVES

~Finally, I want to finish off by talking about salves.    I love creating a great oil infusion, and it is even better when combined with high-quality wax to create a salve!    My favorite salve is Yarrow, as it heals a wound like nothing else!    I have found that having a Yarrow salve on hand is a very smart idea, as we all get cuts and scrapes and this salve works so quickly to heal the skin.   So this beauty tip is more about protection and healing than about simply beautifying!

  1. Hey Miranda. Lovely post and suggestions. I am curious about yarrow salve and will be giving it a try real soon. I have had good results with Rosemary rinse personally and use it regularly.
