Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. For today’s post, I have decided to share a countdown of my five favorite books about the Goddess Persephone. I thought that this would be a good list to do in order to recommend some great Queen of the Underworld book content for the Dark Half of the Year! As a note, this list is only non-fiction works on the Goddess Persephone, though I could easily do a list of fiction book recommendations featuring Persephone, as there are many.
Number 5: Queen of the Sacred Way: A Devotional Anthology in Honor of Persephone by Bibliotheca Alexandrina
~My number five pick is an anthology devotional text on the Goddess. It is a collection by one of my preferred publishing houses for devotional works, Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It is a great starting off point for those interested in the Queen of the Underworld of the Greek Pantheon.
Number 4: Goddesses in Everywoman: Powerful Archetypes in Women’s Lives by Jean Shinoda Bolen, MD
~My number four pick is a favorite book of mine, and is also one of my favorite books on archetypes ever! The chapter on the Persephone archetype is a great overview of the Goddess in her Springtime Maiden aspect, although I will note that it does not delve deeply into her Underworld aspect.
Number 3: Persephone’s Pathway: Wisdom, Magick, & Growth by Jennifer Heather
~My number three pick is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed, as it has a lot of great practical knowledge of how to honor the Goddess. A great book choice for anyone who wants to deepen their bond with Persephone as a Goddess!
Number 2: Persephone Rising: Awakening the Heroine Within by Carol S. Pearson
~My number two pick is another one that is focused on archetypes. This one is more specifically focused on the archetypes of the figures within the Persephone myth. I really adore this one for its more in-depth analysis of both the Springtime Maiden and Underworld Queen aspects of Persephone!
Number 1: Persephone Unveiled: Seeing the Goddess & Freeing Your Soul by Charles Stein
~My number one pick has long been my favorite book on Persephone, ever since I first read it nearly a decade ago! It is an incredibly researched analysis of the Persephone myth, her appearances in other myths, and the Eleusinian Mysteries. I love how it combines the mythology with a philosophical approach and the spiritual beliefs of ancient mystery cults! The Eleusinian Mysteries have long been my favorite ancient mystery cult, adding depth to my love of this book!
~I hope you have enjoyed this countdown. What is your favorite non-fiction book about Persephone? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
