My Thoughts on Renfield (2023)

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings!   Today’s post is a review sharing my thoughts on the new 2023 film Renfield.    I was very excited when I learned that this film was being produced, as a huge lover of Vampires in general and Dracula retellings in particular.

I did not get a chance to see this film in theaters, but my husband and I finally got a chance to see it this weekend, as it is currently streaming on Prime!   We both had slight trepidation based on being uncertain about how Nicolas Cage would do in the role of Dracula, but we are both fans of Nicolas Hoult in comedy roles making this a film that we knew would at least be entertaining.    From the beginning of the film, I knew that the humor was very much to my taste and that my husband would also enjoy himself.

I loved the over-the-top nature of the film, the crazy violence and gore, and the zany visual effects.    Nicolas Hoult did a fantastic job of bringing Renfield to life, which I had the utmost faith in since I loved his portrayal of a zombie in Warm Bodies.   Renfield has some zombie-like characteristics but with more of a worker-bee drone familiar to the Vampire Edge.   The plot of the film made good use of the modern-day setting.

Basically, the Vampire is a good monster figure to use to symbolize the fears of the day no matter what era is current when a film or book is released.    What better modern metaphor for the horrors of the Vampire than Narcissism?   Seeing Renfield in a support group for Co-Dependent people dealing with Narcissists was very entertaining.   It was very fun to see Renfield use the attachments he formed in the group to find food for his Master.    The inclusion of a Crime Family who gets aligned with Dracula was the chef’s kiss, as it also referenced the famed Vampire association with addiction quite well!

Overall, I found this film to be an uproarious send-up and love letter to Vampire media.   If you love Vampires, I would say this is a must-watch this Spooky Season!   I hope you have enjoyed this review.   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
