Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings! Today’s post is a countdown of my five favorite female-driven werewolf films. I know this is a much shorter list than my Vampire film list earlier in the week, but I am a much bigger Vampire fan than a Werewolf fan, so I have fewer favorites. Without further ado, here’s my list.
Number 5: Never Cry Werewolf (2007)
~This one is a little-known Canadian film, which may have even been a television movie (I honestly am not sure). I first saw this in high school during Spooky Season when a monster movie marathon was aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. Yes, this was back when we used to watch live television and before the Sci-Fi Channel changed the spelling of their name. I was excited to see this film due to it starring Nina Dobrev, who I knew from Degrassi the Next Generation, as this film was made before The Vampire Diaries. It is a cute little film about a high school student taking on her Werewolf neighbor and enlisting the help of a television action star, played by Kevin Sorbo (of Hercules fame). This film seems to be at least partly inspired by the original Fright Night only with Werewolves instead of Vampires, maybe that is why I find this one enjoyable!
Number 4: She-Wolf of London (1990)
~Okay, so this one is a bit of a cheat, as it is not a film but a short-lived early 90s television series. It takes on a lot of the energy of old Universal Horror films to create a very 90s take on what a Werewolf story can look like. I enjoy that our lead Werewolf is female and that she has a handsome mythology professor as her guiding force during her transformations! It is a really cute show, that only had 20 episodes if you want to do a marathon viewing as part of your Spooky Season celebrations!
Number 3: Cursed (2005)
~I really enjoyed this Christina Ricci-led Werewolf film ever since it came out. Of course, I may have been biased due to my love of Wes Craven’s works. It is also of note that the film was written by Kevin Williamson and that Julie Plec was one of the co-producers, which shows an early interest in the two for doing supernatural creature stories. This was four full years before they would go on to adapt The Vampire Diaries for television! The story leans heavily on the Universal Horror tropes again, but this time with the added bonus of taking place in Hollywood!
Number 2: Red Riding Hood (2011)
~Who does not love a good twist on a fairytale? Making Little Red Riding Hood into a Werewolf story is an obvious way to make a darker and more twisted version of the original story. It is not the only fairytale adaptation to do the Red Riding Hood Werewolf thing either, as Once Upon a Time famously does this too. Ironically that show began airing the same year this film was released. The film starred Amanda Seyfried and also featured Gary Oldman as a Werewolf hunter. I love this film mostly for its atmosphere and ambiance!
Number 1: Ginger Snaps(2000)
~No other film could have topped my list! This is my absolute favorite Werewolf film of all time. It tells the story of Ginger and her younger sister Brigitte, as they try to deal with Ginger’s transformation after she was attacked by a wolf one night. It is often stated that this film was a major inspiration for Jennifer’s Body, and I certainly do see the comparisons. They are both incredible films, and if you are a fan of one I highly recommend checking out the other. Now, this film was a Canadian film that was released nearly a decade before Jennifer’s Body. It also had two sequels that were both released in 2004. Although they are not nearly as good as the original, they are worth watching for fans of this original film. The first sequel takes place directly following the first, but the other was a pseudo-remake of the first film that was set in the 1800s. If you love a good gory story centered on sisterhood and rites of passage (as the Werewolf transformation is literally timed with the menstrual cycle), this is the perfect film for you!
