Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings! For today’s Spooky Season post, I have decided to do my ranking of all 8 seasons of The Vampire Diaries. This is partially inspired by my earlier ranking of the seasons of Charmed. While Charmed is my favorite show of all time, The Vampire Diaries was my favorite show currently running during my late teenage years and my early twenties! Although the show could never displace Charmed, and I may even prefer its spin-off The Originals (as my love for the two series is nearly equal and I can never quite decide which I love more) this show has a very special place in my heart. That is why I had to do this ranking as part of the happiest time of the year! Without further ado, here’s my ranking.
Number 8: Season 8
~The final season is the weakest of the bunch, however, I actually do enjoy this season much more than the majority of the fandom, who tend to revile this season. While I did not enjoy how they wrote Bonnie and Caroline’s romantic fates, I did actually enjoy the Sirens as villainous figures. Another saving grace of this season is that Katherine got to come back as the Queen of Hell! I know a lot of people disliked this choice, but I felt it was a perfect way to bring the tale full circle!
Number 7: Season 1
~This one may confuse some people since although the first season is what drew me into the world of this show, it was not my favorite season by any stretch. It is a well-done introduction, but that is what the whole season feels like each time I rewatch it, a setup for what is to come. I think I was one of the only people who actually adored my favorite character, Caroline, from the very beginning, but season one does feel like just a setup to get her ready for vampirism! I get serious sentimental feelings from this season, but it is not my go-to season to rewatch unless I’m rewatching the whole series.
Number 6: Season 7
~I know this season is another commonly reviled one, for being the first one without Elena. However, as someone who grew very tired of Elena, as she is a boring and annoying character, I found it refreshing to have a season where Caroline, and to a lesser extent Bonnie, became the feminine focus! I remember for the first four seasons how much I wished they would make Elena more like her book counterpart because I so badly wanted to like and relate to her before I fully admitted Caroline is just like the book Elena and that I far prefer Katherine over Elena in the series! I truly enjoy seeing all of the chaos of Caroline becoming a mom and the Heretic storyline was actually interesting to me.
Number 5: Season 6
~I really love the character of Kai Parker and the whole Prison World storyline in general! That is what gets this ranked so highly on this list. I also really enjoy seeing humanity less Caroline! There is not much else to say about this season, but overall I do enjoy the season.
Number 4: Season 5
~The fifth season gets ranked this highly almost entirely because of Katherine’s storyline and the one-hundredth episode! I love that simple and small moment of Klaus and Caroline finally getting to have sex, even if it was only once. It was the single moment that my favorite ship, my OTP of the universe, was shown as truly romantically linked on screen! So yes, this season is ranked here for my love of that romance.
Number 3: Season 4
~This season is such a great ride through the chaotic mess of seeing relationships change, the roles of the Originals evolve, and the introduction of the Five and Silas. I have such fun with each rewatch of this season, which also has some of my favorite Klaus and Caroline moments. Plus major bonus points for humanity less Elena being the only tolerable version of her character, because she is so much like Katherine!
Number 2: Season 2
~This season duked it out for the number one slot, as both of these seasons nearly tied for me. Ultimately, I am happy with my ranking as it stands. I adore this season, mostly for the introduction of the Originals, having Caroline turn, and for getting to focus so deeply on Katherine! It truly is an A-plus season of The Vampire Diaries!
Number 1: Season 3
~The only season that could outrank season two is season three. I love the deepening of Klaus and Stefan’s bond, the introduction of Rebekah, the beginning of Klaus and Caroline’s romantic undercurrent, and the interesting plot points! The Mikaelson Ball is still one of my very favorite sequences in the entire series. I cannot rave more about this phenomenal season of The Vampire Diaries.
