Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings! Today’s post is another book review of a title generously given to me by Crossed Crow Books in order to review here! The book I am reviewing today is Witchcraft Unchained: Exploring the History & Traditions of British Craft by Craig Spencer.
Spencer’s book is an incredibly well-researched deep dive into the history of British Witchcraft! He goes into detail on several of the individuals that impacted what the Craft has become today, has an in-depth breakdown of the meanings of witchcraft terminology, goes over the origins of different witchcraft systems, and so much more. It was a thoroughly engrossing read for me. It was great that the author included an explanation of deity work and how it has evolved, an exploration of sacred sexuality, and even the Qabalah. I was impressed by the amount of academic research the author put into this book. I appreciated reading a book that combined a massive amount of history with some rituals and even personal anecdotes to round out the work. The author also did not shy away from expressing opinions that may be considered unpopular. That is something that I always love to see, someone that is willing to state their viewpoint openly!
Overall, I believe this book would be a beneficial reading experience for anyone who is interested in the history of witchcraft, particularly the practices within the UK. The book is jam-packed with a great deal of information and is great food for thought. I want to thank Crossed Crow Books for sending me a digital copy of this book! I hope that you have enjoyed reading my thoughts on this book. Have you read Witchcraft Unchained? Are you interested in reading it? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
