Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings!   Today’s post is a book review of a book kindly given to me by Crossed Crow Books in order to read and review here.   The book is Sun God & Moon Maiden by Gordon Strong.

The subtitle of this book is “The Secret World of the Holy Grail” making it an ideal read for me, as it is all about the magic of the Arthurian legends.   Regular readers here will know that I read everything related to Avalonian and Arthurian lore that I can get my hands on!   So I want to thank Crossed Crow Books for providing me with a digital copy of this intriguing text.

Gordon Strong has written a very compelling overview of the Arthurian legends that is at once a work of comparative religion, finding parallels to classical mythology, as well as a brilliantly researched work of scholarship.    I found the format of the book fascinating, as he delved into Arthur as Solar Hero, the Light and Dark Feminine with Guinevere and Morgan le Fay, examined the opening of perceptions via psychedelic drugs, and even the Nazi usage of heroic myth within their propaganda!   I did not expect the book to encompass nearly this many facets, but I found myself utterly enthralled by the way the author was able to bring all of this together in a beautiful tapestry of esoteric analysis.    This has to be one of my favorite books given to me by Crossed Crow Books I have read yet!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is intrigued by how the Arthuriad fits into the context of world mythology.   It is a well-written and interesting read that has so many layers.    Some of the observations that I read in this book fit so perfectly with my own views on Arthurian figures, and that made me happy to know that other people have come to similar conclusions through analysis of the Arthurian legends!
