Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darling readers! Today’s post is all about fun movies to watch for the Summer Solstice. I figured this was an excellent companion piece to yesterday’s book post. Some of these films are very summery, while others are more loosely connected, but I feel that these films still give me summer vibes! Without further ado, here’s the countdown.
Number 7: Midsommar (2019)
~For those who love psychological horror, this one is a must-watch for the Solstice! It is such a visceral and raw film that kept me thinking for months the first time I watched it. I would recommend this one to anyone that wants a good scare or is interested in cults! It is far from your average summery fare, but it is a great palate cleanser for those who are not fans of sugary sweet beachy films.
Number 6: Aquamarine (2006)
~As a huge fan of Alice Hoffman, I could not forget to include this awesome film based on her middle-grade novel. I really loved the book when I first read it in elementary school, so I was excited to watch the film when it premiered in 2006. I really love how they adapted the story, with changes that worked perfectly for the screen. This is a great friendship-oriented film full of summery fun imagery and a lot of mermaid-inspired looks!
Number 5: Don’t Make Waves (1967)
~I had to include a classic 60s beach film in this list. For me, this one is the best! That is likely because I really adore Sharon Tate, who starred in this adorable beach party-centric film! I am also a Tony Curtis fan, so this one hits really sweet notes for me!
Number 4: The Karnstein Trilogy (1970-1971)
~The Vampire Lovers (1970), Lust for a Vampire (1971), & Twins of Evil (1971)~
~I already wrote a post last week about how soothing I find these films. I know that they are not technically summer films, but with all the lush greenery shown in the woods, it is obvious that they are set during the summer months. That is enough for me to include these super fun vampire flicks here! These are great for lovers of campy horror and vampires.
Number 3: A Midsummer Night’s Dream(1935) & (1999)
~I had to list both of my two favorite versions of this film in my list here, as they are both truly excellent! I am a huge lover of classical literature, and this is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. I adore all the Faery hijinks! Plus you do not get more Summer Solstice related than a play literally set on the night of the Solstice, Midsummer being an alternate name for the holiday!
Number 2: Practical Magic (1998)
~I love this movie so much! On any other list, this would be ranked number one, but as it is not a technical summer film, I restrained myself and put it at number two. The primary point of the film is set in the summer, with the Aunts even referencing the Solstice gathering they are going to when Sally is leaving to rescue Gillian! This proves that the film is set in the summer. We also get to see the beauty of the blooming garden and the greenery surrounding their house throughout the course of the film! It is an incredible film about sisterhood, true love, and the bonds of family.
Number 1: Splash (1984)
~This one just had to be number one, as it is one of my favorites of all time! I love this mermaidy and summery romance between a human and a mermaid. The romance element of the film is very fun, and I love the mermaid lore being tied directly to moon lore. I think this is a summer must-watch for all Faery and mermaid lovers!
~I hope that you have enjoyed this countdown. Did I include any of your favorite Summer movies? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
