Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darling readers! For this week’s Femme Fatale Friday, I have decided to focus on the character of Nadja from the hilarious sitcom What We Do In The Shadows. This sitcom is based on the New Zealand film of the same title that came out in 2014. The major improvement the FX sitcom took when adapting the original film was to include a female vampire in the main cast! Nadja is my favorite character in the show, well technically I love Nadja Doll even more, but she is Nadja’s human consciousness inside a doll making her still Nadja.
Nadja of Antipaxos is a vampire who is of Greek and Romani descent. She is about 500 years old and famously turned Lazlo, her long-term lover, and husband, in the seventeenth or eighteenth century (it is slightly uncertain). In the very beginning of the series we learn that although she has been with Lazlo for centuries, she has also been obsessed with a human lover that keeps reincarnating. She meets him yet again at the beginning of the series and tried to reunite with him. Every time they become lovers he ends up dying by beheading, as she usually accidentally killed him during sex! That is something that is so hilarious to watch. Nadja is also the one to turn one of the young geeky characters we meet in the beginning of the series because she felt bad for her. This leads to a hilarious transition process where the young college student does not know what is happening to her!
The series is filled with truly chaotic vampire hijinks. There is the accidental killing of elders, being put on vampire trial, becoming leaders of the council, and opening a nightclub. I love how much Nadja is involved in the important plot points of the series! She and Nandor end up becoming leaders of the vampire council. Later, she ended up becoming a nightclub owner of a vampire nightclub! However, the best thing to happen involving Nadja is when she had her human soul (which they conjure into the modern world) bound to a doll. That is how we get Nadja Doll! She is a hilarious character that is a living doll that has Nadja’s personality and usually always mocks the male vampires and Guillermo (who is Nandor’s human familiar). The male vampires, are Lazlo, Nandor, and Colin Robinson (who is an energy vampire). It also provided balance in the household, as it provided an extra female voice, even though Nadja Doll is just an extension of Nadja! I adore that this series had such diversity in the vampire lore they chose to include! There is even a great use of actors that famously appeared in vampire films playing themselves as if they were actually vampires!
It is likewise fun to see werewolves and witches included in order to be mocked. I find it very interesting that Nadja seemed to have so much witchy knowledge as she is of Romani descent and likely practiced Romani Magick. Her hatred of witches is likely due to trauma endured in childhood from being an outcast because of her Romani heritage! At least that is my interpretation based on historical magickal knowledge. Even in a very wacky show, this lends a bit of emotional gravitas.
I hope that you have enjoyed this short overview of one of my favorite female vampire characters. Do you enjoy What We Do In The Shadows? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
