Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darling readers. For today’s post, I will be discussing why it is so important to take good care of ourselves. This topic has been heavy on my mind lately, as last week I was sick and pushed myself to try and work through it, even as the air was polluted with smoke from the Canadian forest fires. Of course, this only served to make me sicker and the healing process slower. I am finally mostly healed, as I write this. I am so glad that I chose to put my own self-care at the forefront, only I wish that I had done it before making my symptoms worse! I do regret making myself sicker and impeding my healing process, but I went on to take very good care of myself over the next few days in order to heal up.
I think it is very important to find specific self-care rituals and regimes that work for us. My ways of taking care of myself will not necessarily work for everyone, but I do want to share some of my self-care rituals, especially ones I use when I am ill because I want to give my readers some inspiration if they are creating a self-care regimen for themselves. Some of the main self-care activities I perform each day include doing yoga every morning, doing tarot readings and oracle pulls for myself, and drinking tea. When I am ill, I tend to drink even more tea in order to soothe and heal myself. Now that I am deepening my herbal knowledge with my herbalism class, I am able to formulate my own blends to heal and soothe myself. I also utilize tinctures that I have made to help self-heal, and I find that putting a shot of tincture in my tea helps sweat out toxins better than putting in alcohol alone!
Other than tea, and the honey I put in it, another great self-care ritual for healing is taking baths. Baths are soothing and can help in detoxifying. Warm water and steamy air tend to help break up any congestion you are experiencing during a cold!
All of this being said, my favorite way to self-soothe and relax while I am ill is to lay on my couch underneath blankets and watch movies. I do this while also drinking lots of tea and vitamin water. My favorite types of movies to watch when I feel sick are actually horror films. This may sound strange, but I find it very relaxing and soothing to watch scary movies when I am not doing well, as it shows me that even if I feel like death, I am not doing as badly as the characters in those movies! I also love watching old movies when sick, but that has a huge amount of crossover, as many of the best horror films to soothe are the old ones.
This time around, I watched some fun slasher flicks, Bride of Frankenstein (my favorite Univeral Monster flick), and several Hammer Horror films. I especially found the Hammer Horror films great fun in soothing me into relaxation. I got to rewatch all of my favorite Hammer Horror vampire flicks, as they are some of my favorite vampire films ever! With these old horror films, I do not need to worry about falling asleep watching them, as I have seen them many times and will not miss anything! I also did a lot of reading, as I find reading very soothing, so I read some good fiction as well as Avalonian magick books. This made it a way to both relax and find inspiration for future writing both from my reading and the watching of old horror films, so that became useful!
The last thing I want to mention is that I recently purchased a Scentsy aroma therapy doll. She is Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas and I adore her. The smell of the Scentsy pack that is named “Jack’s Obsession” is apples, cinnamon, and cloves. I am so happy that I was able to cuddle this doll and have the aromatherapy soothe me as I healed!
