The Cult of Aphrodite, in Russia?

For this week’s Femme Fatale Friday, which is the final Femme Fatale Friday of Aphrodite April, I have decided to do a post about the finding of a grave in Russia back in October.   What is unique in this archeological discovery is that this woman was found with items that identified her as a Priestess of Aphrodite.   She had a silver medallion that obviously depicted Aphrodite with ten of the zodiac signs surrounding the medallion.   This shows us signs that the Cult of Aphrodite spread as far and wide as Russia!

As someone with a father who is of Russian and Ukrainian descent, this has a deep impact on me.   This means that Aphrodite could likely be an Ancestral Goddess for me.   By Ancestral Goddess, I mean that she was worshipped by my own ancestors!   I already know that Rhiannon, Blodeuwedd, and most especially Morgana are Ancestral Goddesses on my mother’s side (as her side has the Celtic lineage).   This discovery of Aphrodite worship in the area where my father’s lineage comes from gives me another Goddess to believe was worshipped by my ancestors!   Much like the idea of having Faery Queens (or Goddesses) as ancestors, having deities worshipped by our ancestors being protectors of our bloodlines is not an uncommon principle in the magickal community.

Aphrodite is a Goddess who was so widespread that she made her way all the way up to Russia!   How incredible is that?   I am so delighted to know that finding evidence of the worship of ancient Gods and Goddesses is still being made by archeologists.   The Goddess Aphrodite has proven to have had a cult that was truly all over the ancient world.    I find this fact to be something that is really exciting.   The Priestesses of Aphrodite were such amazing Goddess workers.   They ranged from Sacred Sexual Workers, essentially Prostitutes that enabled men to have sex with the Goddess before battle as a blessing, to tenders of her Sacred Temples!   I love that these amazing Priestesses were all over the ancient world.
