Top 10 On-Screen Old Hollywood Pairs

For today’s post, I have decided to do a countdown of my favorite on-screen pairings in Old Hollywood Classics.   Some will be off-screen lovers who appeared together on-screen, and others may appear in more than one pairing!

Number 10: Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis

~For my number ten pick, I had to choose the pair who appeared in what has to be the funniest comedy of all time.   Marilyn and Tony lit up the screen and turned up the laughs in Some Like it Hot!

Number 9: Jayne Mansfield and Tom Ewell

~Jayne Mansfield partnered with Tom Ewell, a stage actor in The Girl Can’t Help It.   This adorable screwball rom-com is such a fun classic to behold.

Number 8: Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell

~Tom Ewell reprised his Broadway role in The Seven Year Itch.   Although he and Marilyn never officially had love scenes, as the Hays Office made sure all references to infidelity were in dream sequences, in the stage show he actually committed adultery.    That I why I  felt that this should count!

Number 7: Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift

~Elizabeth starred opposite good friend Montgomery Clift on more than one occasion.   Any of the films they did together are great to watch, as the pair is just so beautiful to behold!

Number 6: Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable

~In the final film to be completed by both Marilyn and Clark Gable they played opposite one another in some great flirtatious scenes.   Now, I will be honest The Misfits is not my favorite film for either actor, as I loathed Arthur Miller’s script.   However, the star power and acting prowess do make up for it!

Number 5: Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable

~How could I make this list and not include Clark Gable’s only Oscar-winning role!   Colbert and Gable were hilarious and sweet together in It Happened One Night!

Number 4: Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable

~Of course number four would go to the iconic pairing of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler!    I adore both actors and this film is one of the most romantic ever.

Number 3: Myrna Loy and William Powell

~In many films these two played great lovers.   In The Thin Man and its several sequels, they brought to life fun-loving Nick and Nora Jones!

Number 2: Jean Harlow and Clark Gable

~Ah, the great fun of watching Gable and Harlow together cannot be understated!   Pick any of the six films they co-starred in for a good time.   My personal favorite is Red Dust, but my husband adores China Seas!

Number 1: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

~How could any other pair compete with these on-screen and off-screen lovers?   The answer is, they cannot!   Whether you feel like a historical epic like Cleopatra or a dramatic masterpiece like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? These two have you covered!   The fact that they married not once but twice is just icing on this Old Hollywood cake.

~I hope you have enjoyed this countdown.   Did I mention your favorite on-screen pair from the Golden Age of Hollywood?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
