For today’s post, I have decided to rank all of the Original siblings from the Vampire Diaries Universe! This is based on my opinions of each of the siblings as I have watched them over the course of all three series in this universe. My opinions grew and changed slightly based on getting to know the characters better, so I thought this would be a fun list to do!
Number 7: Finn Mikaelson
~Let’s be very honest here, no one would choose Finn as a favorite Mikaelson. He is boring and a bit tedious to be honest. I could never understand why a badass like Sage would ever have gone for this wet blanket. I have to admit I totally get why Klaus kept him daggered for nine centuries!
Number 6: Freya Mikaelson
~Freya is the oldest of the Original siblings, but she is interestingly the last we get to meet. For over a millennium the Mikaelson family believed that Freya had died of plague as a child. This lie was told by Esther to cover up the fact that she had convinced her sister to use magic in order to solve her fertility issues. Like a fairytale deal that would make Rumpelstiltskin proud, she offered up her firstborn and the firstborn of every generation of her entire bloodline to her older sister! Freya is unique in being a witch that has been taught magic that kept her young and alive for over a thousand years, therefore the only sibling to live that long and not ever be a vampire.
Number 5: Henrik Mikaelson
~The youngest of the Original siblings is only seen in flashbacks, as he died over a thousand years ago. It is his death that actually prompted the creation of vampires as Esther and Mikael sought to protect their remaining children from death at the mercy of werewolves! He is shown to be a sweet and loving child, which makes his death all the more tragic.
Number 4: Kol Mikaelson
~Kol is the immature trickster brother when we first meet him in The Vampire Diaries. In The Originals, we get to see more character development and depth. We also learn that he was the only Original sibling to have begun to practice magic before they turned. This meant that he had to give up being a witch when he turned against his will. It also served to explain his lifelong obsession with witches, as he was trying to regain what he had lost! His relationship with Davina is one of the sweetest in The Originals, as well.
Number 3: Elijah Mikaelson
~Elijah is the stoic and serious brother who always looked out for Rebekah and Klaus. We get to see him soften when he feels love. This is seen first with Katherine in flashbacks and later when he falls in love with Hayley! It is a truly tragic thing that Elijah never got to be happy in love.
Number 2: Rebekah Mikaelson
~Rebekah is by far the best female Original sibling. She may be spoiled and bratty, but she is also fiercely loyal to Klaus. It is Rebekah that stayed with him through the good and bad for centuries when the others abandoned him. She even continued to forgive him for all of his slights, daggering her and ruining her relationships. At the end of the day, she proved that she could put her foot down and tell Klaus what she needed from him. It would serve to help her finally get her happy love story with Marcel! This was a relationship over a hundred years in the making and I was so happy to see them happily married after everything.
Number 1: Niklaus “Klaus” Mikaelson
~Yes, he began as the big bad Original hybrid. But, he became so much more! He was a protective sibling, a loving father, and could have been a loyal husband. Unfortunately, we never get to see him find happiness with his true love! I have always been a huge Klaus and Caroline shipper, and after Stefan’s death in The Vampire Diaries finale, I thought Klaus would get his chance to be her “last love” on The Originals! Sadly, this was not to be, as he perished to save his daughter in the finale of The Originals. Honestly, this was a truly epic and selfless way for this often maligned figure to meet his end, so I find it bittersweet instead of purely sad!
