My Top 10 Television Couples Who Should Have Ended Up Together

For today’s post, I would like to do a countdown of my top ten picks for couples I wanted to see end up together on television shows.   As the hopeless romantic that I am, I always end up getting super emotionally invested in the love lives of onscreen characters in shows I watch.   That is where this list was born from.   Now, this may be a deeply contested list for some, but I had to make it since I seriously shipped these couples on their respective shows and was saddened to see them not be endgame!   My top two choices were very close for me and honestly nearly tied, but I had to give preference to the relationship that I have loved for a longer time!

Number 10: Jackie Burkhart and Steven Hyde That 70s Show  (1998)

~While it is not my all-time favorite show, I did enjoy watching it.   That is why the number ten spot on my list just had to go to this adorable couple from the 70s-themed sitcom.   They had great chemistry and sincerely made one another better people!   I hated that they ended due to Hyde marrying a stripper.   Do not even get me started on the ridiculousness of Jackie and Fez ending up together!

Number 9: Alaric Saltzman and Jenna Sommers The Vampire Diaries (2009)

~The number nine spot was easy for me to choose.   Jenna and Alaric were so sweet together in the first two seasons of this supernatural drama!   I hated how they ended, with Jenna’s death.   Alaric did not deserve the endless heartbreak he had on the show from Isobel to Jenna to Jo to Caroline.   He and Caroline were doomed from the beginning, but that made it all the sadder!   If he and Jenna could have had a real go early on, then his subsequent heartbreaks would not have occurred!

Number 8: Buffy Summers and Angel Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)

~There are two types of Buffyverse fans, the Buffy and Angel shippers or the Buffy and Spike shippers.   Like Sarah Michelle Gellar herself, I have always fallen into the former category!   We get so many scenes that show them as being so great together, an almost real union.   Alas, they were doomed from the beginning in one way or another.   Yet it is always fun to think about what if!

Number 7: Robin Scherbatsky and Barney Stinson How I Met Your Mother (2005)

~I am amongst the legions of fans that loathed the series finale.   Not only do we get Robin and Ted forced back together after the mother’s death (not fair), but we also had a season-long lead-up to a wedding that ended in divorce after three years!    I wanted to see Robin and Barney end up together, as they are well matched and have awesome chemistry!

Number 6: Rory Gilmore and Jess Mariano Gilmore Girls (2000)

~There are three camps of Gilmore Girls fans, ones who love Dean, ones who love Logan (inexplicably), and those like myself who shipped Rory with Jess from the get-go of season two!   These two were adorable together as teens, still well-matched in their 20s, and proved to be lifelong friends in their 30s.   How they did not end up together in the revival is astonishing!

Number 5: Paige Matthews and Kyle Brody Charmed (1998)

~Paige deserved better than a rushed romance in season 8.   Her earlier love story from the previous season ended tragically in Brody’s death.  But he became a white lighter, and that means they should have ended up together!

Number 4: Bonnie Bennett and Enzo St.John The Vampire Diaries (2009)

~Bonnie went through endless tragedy on this show.   Having the love of her life die just as they decided he would take the cure to live a human life with her is beyond the pale!   She deserved so much better, as did Enzo!

Number 3: Haley Marshall-Kenner and Elijah Mikaelson The Originals (2013)

~Haley and Elijah’s romance was always in the background of this series.   Through all of the trials and tribulations, they tried to be together.   They proved their love and undying attachment, only to have it end in tragedy time and again!   It feels unfair that these star-crossed lovers never made it work.

Number 2: Caroline Forbes and Klaus Mikaelson The Vampire Diaries (2009)

~My favorite The Vampire Diaries Universe ship has always been Caroline and Klaus!   I know he began as a villain, but I have always loved a bad boy.   The chemistry between the two was ever-present from the time they met in season three.   Over many ups and downs, they could not deny their attraction.   But we never get to see Klaus fulfill his promise of being her last love, which I do not think I will ever get over!   I also have to mention that Klaus was the only person who chose Caroline first, others always had her as a second choice.   This was not fair to Caroline, as she was an amazingly loyal and loving character!   Klaus and Caroline brought out the best in one another and they could have been a truly epic power couple given the chance!

Number 1: Phoebe Halliwell and Cole TurnerCharmed (1998)

~Regular readers of my blog will be utterly unsurprised by my choice of the number one couple who should have ended up together.   I have written an entire post about how they are the best couple on the show in the past.   I also have whole multi-chapter fanfic about them posted on fanfiction.net!   These two proved time and time again their love had not limited, only to not end up together!   Phoebe deserved so much more than a rushed relationship with Coop.   While her being with a cupid was teased back in season two, it was not the same cupid so this still seemed wrong on so many levels for her!

~I hope that you have enjoyed this countdown.   Did I mention your favorite doomed pair?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
