For today’s post, I have decided to do a countdown of my favorite mermaid characters from film and television!
Number 5: Miranda from Miranda and Mad About Men
~For my number five choice I had to pick the mermaid character who is my namesake, with different spellings but the same name! Miranda is the protagonist of the 1940s and 1950s British mermaid films, and she is a boy crazy hoot to watch!
Number 4: Ondina from Mako Mermaids: An H2O Adventure
~My number four choice had to be my favorite mermaid of the H2O sequel series. Ondina is a headstrong and willful mermaid who ends up a teacher of younger mermaids. She also gets huge points for falling in love with a merman. That romantic subplot made for interesting material in the second season of this show.
Number 3: Aquamarine from Aquamarine
~Based on the Alice Hoffman novel, this story is one that I adore. It is a testament to the power of friendship, and the film adaptation even allows the titular mermaid to avoid an unwanted marriage by proving love exists thanks to forming real friendships based on mutual love with humans!
Number 2: Ariel from The Little Mermaid
~I am sure that this is a name many waited to see appear on this list, and some may be shocked it is not number one. Now, Ariel is my favorite Disney mermaid and very close second favorite Disney Princess! She is honestly the Disney Princess I most closely resemble personality-wise, and that makes her a very important character to me. However, I put her as number two because she gave up her tail (for love which is admirable) but she still left the sea.
Number 1: Madison from Splash
~There was no other mermaid that could have ranked in at number one! Madison is another mermaid character that I could easily relate to. Especially given her very romantic temperament and her intellect. She even got the ending that most mermaid lovers, and wannabe merfolk, desire. Madison got to have the man she loved and return to the sea! Allen ended up going to her Mermaid Kingdom with her instead of her staying on land with him! That is the way that I always wished that The Little Mermaid ended. It is also the reason that Madison beat out all other mermaid characters for this top slot!
Special Mentions: Phoebe Halliwell from Charmed
~The season five premiere of Charmed is one of my absolute favorite episodes of my all-time favorite series. Seeing my favorite character turn into a mermaid due to her complicated love life was incredibly satisfying! It also made for an episode I can re-watch countless times.
Ryn from Siren
~Ryn is the main character in the Freeform series Siren. She has a very complex story arc that involves falling in love with a human and trying to navigate a matriarchal mermaid hierarchy. I love the character, but she does not have the punch of the others which is why she only got a special mention!
