I have decided to do a countdown of my favorite female characters from the television series Supernatural for today’s post. Recently, my husband and I have been watching (re-watching in my case) this paranormal drama, and that is what has inspired this post. While the male characters are the central driving force, especially Sam, Dean, and Castiel, there were several great female recurring characters! Given this series ran for fifteen seasons, it is unsurprising that there have been some great recurring female characters, and I will not be including characters to appear only once here! These five I have chosen are ones that I personally adore, for various reasons. Without further ado, here is the countdown.
Number 5: Jo Harvelle
~Jo was a daughter of hunters whom the boys met early in the series, season two to be exact. Personally, I was one of the people that always wished Dean and Jo would have had a chance together before her tragic end. At the end of the day, I loved Jo for being a young woman trying to find herself amongst the chaos of knowing the truth of the paranormal entities in the world.
Number 4: Jody Mills
~Ranking in at number four is Sheriff Jody Mills, who was the head of the Sioux Falls Police Department. The viewers first met Jody before the apocalypse, when the dead began rising. Over the next few seasons, she proved herself to be a great supporter of the Winchester brothers. She would even become a hunter and surrogate mother to children whose lives had been impacted by the supernatural world! This woman makes the list based on being a total badass, and a great maternal figure in the series.
Number 3: Charlie Bradbury
~Charlie is a tech-savvy hacker who first came into the series when the Winchesters were battling the leviathans. She was sweet and sassy, and became a surrogate sister of sorts to the brothers! Of course, she too would have a very tragic end, but that possibly makes her story more poignant.
Number 2: Mary Winchester
~The mother of the central characters ranks in at number two for me. She was a badass woman who was raised as a hunter but left the life in hopes of having a normal life with her husband and children. Her death at the hands of the demon Azazel would lead her husband John on a lifelong search for revenge. It was her death when Sam was six months old that would make sure the boys were raised as hunters, but that was only a small part of her story.
Number 1: Rowena MacLeod
~My number one female character may surprise some. Rowena began as a witch who was evil and was even mother to the demon Crowley, aka the King of Hell! In addition, this makes her one of my favorite female villains on the show, and like her son, she is just fun to watch, even as she does despicable things! As her time on the series wore on, it was shown that she could be redeemable. Rowena is, hands down, my favorite witch character to appear on the show. She is unique in being a natural witch, as she had not made a bargain with a demon to gain powers. I enjoy her as a character for being witty, intelligent, and even her manipulative nature. It’s especially funny to see her dysfunctional relationship with Crowley, and her interactions with Sam in the late seasons of the show!
