My Top 5 Witchy Cats

For today’s post I would like to do a countdown of my top five favorite witchy cats! Halloween is slowly approaching, although not nearly quickly enough for me (it is my absolute favorite holiday!). At least I have my birthday, the Autumnal Equinox, and my husband’s birthday this month to satisfy my need to celebrate (these are some of my other favorite days of the year, especially my birthday). I felt that this would be a fun countdown, and I hope you agree!

Number 5: Binx from Hocus Pocus

~Binx is originally a young boy who was turned into a cat by the Sanderson sisters in this Disney Halloween classic.    He then spent centuries attempting to keep the sisters from being re-constituted by a virgin lighting a candle.

Number 4: Kit the Cat from Charmed

~Although Charmed has been one of my all time favorite shows since it premiered when I was seven, Kit only gets the number four spot because she disappeared after season three.   She does make a brief, but memorable, appearance in a season five episode that explained the importance of a witch’s familiar.

Number 3: Salem Saberhagen from Sabrina the Teenage Witch

~Salem is likely the best remembered witchy cat on this list!    For seven seasons of Sabrina the Teenage Witch he was the titular character’s feline companion.    He helped out with, and often caused, chaotic situations for the young witch!    He was wise cracking and funny.

Number 2: Pyewacket from Bell Book and Candle

~The cat familiar owned by Gillian in Bell Book and Candle helped her cast spells when she sang to him.    He was a lovely siamese cat with a lot of intelligence and attitude!

Number 1: Ligeia from The Tomb of Ligeia

~The titular character from this Roger Corman, Edgar Allan Poe flick turned into a cat after she had died.    She was a witch in life with a lot of knowledge of the occult and esoteric, and she was obsessed with immortality!   Ligeia was able to come back to her opium addict husband (played here by the fabulous Vincent Price) by taking over his new wife’s body!    But on this list she gets top billing as the mischievous witchy cat!

Special Mentions: Freya/Wendy as a cat from Witches of East End (books/tv series respectively).    Samantha Stephens from the opening of Bewitched!   I chose to only do these as special mentions because they were not the most iconically only magical part of the character.

~I hope you enjoyed my witchy cat countdown.   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
