My Top 10 Shakespearean Films

Number 10: Hamlet (1969)

~This version of Hamlet starred Marianne Faithfull as Ophelia, and is worth watching for that alone!

Number 9: William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet (1996)

~This is the classic Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes version!

Number 8: William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999)

~Michelle Pfiffer made an awesome Titania in this late 90’s film.

Number 7: Hamlet (1996)

~This is the over four hour Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet.

Number 6: Romeo and Juliet (2013)

~This movie gets huge points from me for best casting of Tybalt ever!    Ed Westwick of Gossip Girl fame played Juliet’s cousin.    I loved the idea of Chuck Bass as Tybalt!!!

Number 5: Hamlet (1990)

~I have said it before, but I just adore Helena Bonham Carter!    She makes a really great Ophelia!

Number 4: Romeo and Juliet (1968)

~The version of the tale of star crossed lovers that cannot be paralleled!    Franco Zeffirelli made great Shakespeare adaptations, and was the first to use actual teenagers to play the lovers!    Olivia Hussey is my all time favorite Juliet!

Number 3: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1968)

~My love of Helen Mirren makes watching her as Hermia a delight!

Number 2: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935)

~The 1935 film is the best one I have seen, from Titania’s lovely costume to young Mickey Rooney as Puck.   Also huge bonus points for casting James Cagney as Bottom!

Number 1: Taming of the Shrew (1967)

~My number one is the comic farce directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton!    I adore both Burton and Taylor, and it is so fun to watch them play the bickering couple in this hilarious comedy!
