Number 5: The Lure (2015)
~This Polish film is a twisted take on the mermaid film, and as bonus it’s also a musical. Check it out for a gory fun filled ride!
Number 4: Aquamarine (2006)
~This film is a delightful adaptation of the beloved book by Alice Hoffman (of Practical Magic fame)! Two young best friends about to be separated when one moves out of state meet and befriend a mermaid trying to prove love is real!
Number 3: The Little Mermaid (1989)
~This Disney classic with all its catchy songs, and beloved characters is a must watch! Ariel is the youngest daughter of King Triton and she falls in love with human Prince Eric and makes a deal with Ursula to gain legs. Of course in the Disney version she gets her prince in the end, Happily Ever After!
Number 2: Splash (1984)
~An adorable favorite starring Daryl Hannah as lovable mermaid Madison who is in love with Tom Hanks as the sweet human Allen! Watching her learn to be more human to fit in is lovely, and you truly feel for her as she gets taken by scientists!
Number 1: Miranda (1948)
~This is my number 1 mermaid movie, and not just because my first name is Maranda (my mom’s special spelling of the name)! An amazing British film starring Glynis Johns as the mischievous mermaid is so sweet to watch. There is also a sequel entitled Mad About Men that sees Johns reprise her role and do a parent trap style swap with a distant relative, and cause even more mayhem! Both movies are the perfect aquatic cinematic escape during cold winter nights!!!
Special Mention: Although this title did not make the list, it is well worth watching. Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948) is an American film starring the incredible William Powell! A delightful romp, that didn’t make the list because the mermaid never speaks in this film!
