Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s Vernal Equinox Femme Fatale Friday post, I will be discussing tending to the Sacred Well within. I always feel more deeply pulled to the energy of the Well Maidens and the Ladies of the Fountain as we welcome in Spring, which is what has inspired this post!
So, how do we embrace the energy of the Well Maiden, Sacred Faery Woman who tends the Waters, to tend to the Sacred Well within? There are several ways to go about this, but the most important part is to work to fill your cup! I think it is such an important thing to remind ourselves of. Far too often, many of us, myself included, end up spreading ourselves so thin in the hopes of getting the most done. Honestly, this is a mindset that often ends up in burnout, and it is one based on the Western ideal of a go-go-go achieve-achieve-achieve mentality.
Instead, if we actively seek to tend to the Sacred Well within ourselves, if we learn to fill our own cups, we can be more present and more capable of doing the work we so badly want to do! This is part of the gift and the emotional healing held by the Well Maidens. In the Elucidation, the Well Maidens were raped, and their Sacred Golden Cups were stolen. This story is more than just horrific; it is also a story of how humans have betrayed the land and betrayed a Sacred Compact with the Fae. By abusing the Well Maidens, the Faery Women tasked with tending to the Sacred Fountains and giving food and drink freely to those who came to them, the humans of the story have defiled the Sacredness of Nature! That is why their land turned into a Wasteland that needed to eventually be healed by the Grail Knight. They were punished, as was their entire land, for their heinous actions. It was the Well Maidens who assured that the land was bountiful and that the people were well-cared for, and when they retreated into the Otherworld, the land ceased to have this bounty!
From this story, we can learn so much about the importance of being in right relationship with Nature, but we can also learn about being in right relationship with the self. The Well Maidens left when they were harmed. They did not accept the treatment from those who sought to defile Nature. Instead, they did what was best for themselves, knowing that they could not freely give Sacred Services, which they valued and had previously gifted to humanity, when they had been so utterly disrespected. Humanity had to earn that right back through the actions of the Grail Knight!
Just like the Well Maidens, we cannot pour from an empty cup. We need to make sure that even as we do our work, especially when that work involves nurturing others, that we have not so fully depleted our resources. There are so many ways that we can refill our cups. We can spend more time in nature, which is ideal for this Vernal Equinox. We can meditate more or do longer yoga sessions. We can nourish our bodies with healthy food and plenty of fresh water. We can take some time away from the chaotic energy of the world and be in silence with our loved ones. Any and all of these are excellent ways to begin to refill your cup and tend to the Sacred Well within!
I hope you have enjoyed this look at tending to the Sacred Well within and rumination on the Well Maidens. What is your favorite way to refill your cup? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
