Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. Today’s blog post is a review of The Once and Future Queen by Nicole Evelina! So, this is a re-read of a book that I originally read five years ago. After re-reading the author’s trilogy of novels about Guinevere, I just had to give this one another read as well.
I am so glad that I have been re-reading Arthurian books that I originally read years ago lately, as I had read them before beginning this blog, so I never had a chance to review them here until now! Now that I have been doing these re-reads, I have been able to really remember my appreciation of these books. I had honestly forgotten just how much I loved this book about Guinevere until my re-read!
It is such a well-researched and lovingly written account of how Guinevere has evolved over the centuries. This is very much a cultural exploration of how Guinevere was written and depicted over the course of the 1500 years that she has been written about! It is very obvious that the author loves the figure of Guinevere very deeply and has a deep desire to remind people that she is more than just a Queen who committed adultery.
I loved how both well-known versions of the legends and lesser-known ones were explored in the book. I also deeply appreciated her exploration of how she built out her world in the novels she wrote about Guinevere and why she made certain choices, as I am always happy to learn the writing process of other writers!
I hope that you have enjoyed this short review of this very well-done book about Guinevere. Have you read this book? Do you want to read it now? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
