Sidereal Astrology & Vedic Nakshatras: Exploring Another Type of Astrology

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   Today’s blog post is about my continuing study of Astrology, which I have been studying quite deeply for the last three years or so.   I had for a very long time not resonated with traditional Western (or Tropical) Astrology, given that the lack of nuance with just discussing the Sun Sign in daily Horoscopes did not resonate with me.   It was when I began to really study my own Natal Chart that I began to resonate with the knowledge found here, which is documented a bit here on this blog.

However, throughout the beginning of 2025, I began studying Vedic Astrology, which is Sidereal, meaning that it focuses on the alignment between the Sun and Stars much more specifically than Tropical Astrology.   The more I explore a deeper understanding of Astrology, the more I resonate with the wisdom found there.   I still have a deep love for Tropical Astrology, but I now have also developed a deep love for Sidereal and Vedic Astrology.   Without further ado, let’s look at some of the differences between Tropical and Sidereal Astrology in my chart!

So, my Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs are different from what they are in Tropical Astrology, which is not uncommon given that Sidereal Astrology uses different calculations.   While I am a Virgo Sun and Moon and a Leo Rising in Tropical Astrology, I am a Leo Sun and Moon and a Cancer Rising in Sidereal Astrology!   When we look at Vedic Astrology, we also get into a more specific Zodiac breakdown, thanks to Nakshatras (or Lunar Mansions) that break down the Zodiac signs in a more nuanced way.   That means that even as a Leo Sun and Moon and Cancer Rising, I may still have a different, more nuanced chart than someone else with those same placements (as the degrees of the signs will determine which of the multiple Nakshatras that fall into that sign you were born under)!

As far as Nakshatras, I am a Sun and Moon in Purva Phalguni Nakshatra and a Rising in Ashlesha Nakshatra.   I will get to what those signs mean a little bit in this post, not going overly detailed, as this is the first post I have ever discussed Sidereal or Vedic, and I do not want it to become confusing.   But first, I want to explain a couple of the really interesting things about Vedic Astrology.   Vedic Astrology puts a lot of emphasis on the Moon Nakshatra, with the Moon Sign overall being more focused on than the Sun Sign, as it is in Tropical Astrology.    In Vedic Astrology, Nakshatras each have a ruling planet, which often differs from the ruling planet of the Zodiac sign they are found within, giving much more depth to the birth chart.   The final Vedic Astrology fact I want to share is that the birth chart has a ruling planet, which is stated to be the highest point in the sky at the moment of your birth.   As a side note, this differs from how Tropical Astrology refers to a ruling planet in a birth chart, as in that case, it is simply the ruling planet of your Rising Sign.

Now that I have gone over a bit of the basics, I want to share a bit about the Purva Phalguni and Ashlesha Nakshatras.   Purva Phalguni is found within the Leo Zodiac Sign, has a ruling planet of Venus, is associated with the element of Water, and is considered to be a very lucky and pleasure-loving Nakshatra!   Because of the Venusian rulership of my Moon Nakshatra, it also shows that Venus is the ruler of my chart, being the highest point of the sky at my birth.   Ashlesha is found within the Cancer Zodiac Sign, has a ruling planet of Mercury, is associated with the element of Water, and is deeply tied to Serpentine energy, leading to a connection to the Divine Feminine and Psychic energy!   Purva Phalguni’s Venus rulership and Leo’s Solar rulership mean that my chart has a lot of Venusian and Solar energy, and with Ashlesha’s Mercury rulership and Cancer’s Lunar rulership, it gives my chart a good deal of Mercurial and Lunar energy also.

I have found so much depth of understanding of my own personality and my life path by beginning to understand not just Tropical Astrology, but now Sidereal and Vedic Astrology.   The Nakshatras add such an intense layer of nuance to the birth chart, which I had never known about until the beginning of 2025 when I happened upon an Astrology video on YouTube, which I had no idea was Vedic Astrology based and led me down a rabbit hole to learn more about this type of astrology.   What with my intense connection to Venus as a planet and the Element of Water, I have found so much has clicked into place by discovering how important Venus is in my Vedic Chart, and that I do have Water as a heavy connection in my Vedic and Sidereal Charts.   There truly is so much to learn when we dig into different types of Astrology and Starlore.   With that, I am going to close off this post, but I will link some articles about the two Nakshatras I have briefly discussed, some of my favorite Vedic Astrology YouTube channels, and a Vedic Chart Calculator below for you to explore more and learn a bit about your own Vedic Chart!

I hope you have enjoyed this rumination on my journey in learning Astrology and getting to know more through studying Vedic Astrology.   Have you explored your Vedic Chart?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
