Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is about the Zodiac Wheel and how it relates to Elemental Energies. As we have just begun the new Astrological Year, with the sun entering the first sign of the Zodiac, Aries, I thought it would be interesting to look at how each part of the year could be seen to relate to a specific element. This is in some ways similar to my recent post on the Zodiac Wheel and Celtic Cosmology, but this time I want to focus on breaking the signs down into quarters and how I think it may relate to the elements and Tarot. Without further ado, let’s get into the Elemental Zodiac Wheel!
AIR ~Time of Aries, Taurus, & Gemini~ Tarot Swords
~I associate the beginning of the Zodiac Wheel with the element of Air. This is the element of intellect, strategy, and forging a new path. It is also the element of the Tarot suit of Swords, which brings with it the energy of battle and struggle, but also overcoming the challenges of the battle. The idea of a great rising force and forging new paths is in great alignment with the Springtime energy of renewal and planting seeds that will flourish in time! As for the signs and elements, Aries therefore would combine the Fire element of the sign with the Air element of the season, the same would go for Taurus combining Earth and Air, with Gemini being double Air.
EARTH ~Time of Cancer, Leo, & Virgo~ Tarot Pentacles
~I associate the second quarter of the Zodiac Wheel with the Earth element, as it is a time of all of the plant life is in full bloom. This is the element of growth, abundance, stability, and fertility of the land. It is also the element of the Tarot suit of Pentacles, which brings in associations with money and abundant growth in all areas of life. As for the signs and elements, Cancer therefore would combine the Water element of the sign with the Earth element of the season, the same would go for Leo combining Fire and Earth, with Virgo being double Earth.
FIRE ~Time of Libra, Scorpio, & Sagittarius~ Tarot Wands
~I associate the third quarter of the Zodiac Wheel with the Fire element, as it is the time of harvesting what has been sown and beginning to amass the wood to keep the hearth fires tended in the cold months. This is the element of passion, sexuality, and inspiration. It is also the element of the Tarot suit of Wands, which brings in associations with the spark of creativity and artistic pursuits. The idea of becoming cozy indoors is very much in line with the warmth of the fire element and the height of Autumn through early Winter. As for the signs and elements, Libra therefore would combine the Air element of the sign with the Fire element of the season, the same would go for Scorpio combining Water and Fire, with Sagittarius being double Fire.
WATER ~Time of Capricorn, Aquarius, & Pisces~ Tarot Cups
~I associate the final quarter of the Zodiac Wheel with the Water element, as it is a time of inward development and diving into the depths of the unconscious while the Earth is in her Wintery slumber. This is the element of the emotions, prophecy, seership, and the depths of the soul. It is also the element of the Tarot suit of Cups, which brings in associations with love, romance, and family life. As for the signs and elements, Capricorn therefore would combine the Earth element of the sign with the Water element of the season, the same would go for Aquarius combining Air with Water, with Pisces being double Water.
~In conclusion, I do want to acknowledge I know that the way I have distributed the elements is different than the seasonal associations most Tarot readers have for the suits, but I find that this made sense for me when I added in the Zodiac Wheel! I hope you have enjoyed this analysis of how the Zodiac Wheel can be broken up into elements throughout the year. What elements do you associate with each time of year?
